“After returning from the army, I didn’t have a job and was looking for where I could work. It was winter, the pre-Christmas period, and I saw that Venipak was looking for temporary employees – parcel sorters for the peak season. I thought, I’ll give it a try. And here I am still trying – for 10 years now,” joked Laurynas Svirskis from Vilnius, who after four years as a sorter became a forklift driver, and now, for a month already, has been testing new responsibilities as a parcel manager at Venipak.
Doesn’t drive, but knows all of Vilnius
Laurynas says that after trying out parcel sorting, he decided to stay at Venipak after Christmas because he liked that the job was not boring.
“I like physical work, I can’t sit still, I enjoy constant movement. That’s exactly what I got in this job – plus a fun team and good managers, so I didn’t need anything more,” he said.
For the first four years, he worked as a sorter – distributing parcels to couriers responsible for specific neighborhoods of Vilnius.
“I still remember the streets of all the districts – I could name by heart which belongs to which neighborhood. I don’t drive, but I still joke with friends that I know Vilnius much better than they do,” Laurynas smiled.
Although parcel sorting is not easy – it requires stamina, speed, and focus on results – Laurynas says his biggest motivation came from colleagues always ready to help one another.
“I remember that stage as one of the most fun – if we didn’t manage something, coworkers would rush to help, and next time I’d help them. Christmas season is really intense, we’d get tired, but still supported each other. Of course, you have to actually want to work – but we quickly spot those who don’t. Overall, the team is very cheerful, there are no dull days here, we always find a way to joke around,” he shared.
From sorter to manager
After several years as a sorter, Laurynas became a forklift driver. He worked in that role for about four years as well.
“That’s just who I am – if someone needs help, I’m always there. Once I helped the forklift drivers, and eventually became one myself. Now I’m adjusting to my new role – parcel manager. I’ve only been in this position for a month, so sometimes I still step in to help the forklift drivers. It’s useful that I understand all the jobs – both sorting and driving – and now I can make their work easier,” he said.
Laurynas admits that being a newcomer again brings challenges, but he’s motivated to prove himself.
“After 10 years, I’m a beginner again, so it takes time to adapt to the new responsibilities. But I believe it’s only a matter of time before I get into the rhythm. What motivates me most now is determination to prove that I can handle this job – I don’t want to disappoint the people who trusted me,” he said.
Appreciates the young team and good pay
His colleague, 19-year-old Mantas Vitkauskas, who works at the Venipak terminal in Kaunas, says it was a friend who suggested the job.
“Before this, I also worked as a parcel sorter, but there time passed really slowly, it was boring, and there was no one to talk to, since the team was much older. After joining Venipak, I realized this job could be totally different. Here, the workday flies by incredibly fast because the team is young, we’re always joking around, and during breaks we discuss common topics. With such a good atmosphere, I don’t even notice how time passes,” said M. Vitkauskas.
He says that what motivates him most is the job’s dynamic nature, the young team, and attractive salary.
“The pay is really good, I can’t complain. And when you come to work, don’t even notice how the day goes by – and you get paid for it – can it get any better? And for those who want to, there are always opportunities to earn more, depending on results – the conditions are really favorable,” he shared.
Who wouldn’t be a good fit?
When asked what qualities and skills a parcel sorter needs, the interviewees say the requirements aren’t too high, but there are a few important ones.
“You really need to be physically fit – it’s a standing job, so endurance is important. Speed matters too – you need to catch on quickly, there’s no time to get bored. And you can’t fake the work – you have to actually do it. But we’d definitely recommend this job to friends – fun team, good pay, caring managers – what more could you need?” said Mantas and Laurynas.
So, if you like movement, aren’t afraid of physical work, value a good team, and want to earn according to your effort – it’s worth a try. Want to know if it’s right for you?
